From Worms to Wall Street

In this week's discussion, we watched videos about project-based learning and how that can be applied from the smallest form to something much larger.

My understanding of project-based learning is where students are able to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. This helps students to see the value in what they are doing and shows them exactly when it would be beneficial to have that skill and/or knowledge. This requires a lot of planning and prep work by the teacher so that when the project actually begins, it will look like the students are doing all of the work. These projects can range from very simple in the earlier grades, to more complex as students move up through high school.

I would love to be able to incorporate more project-based learning in to my communications curriculum. Students could create a "Choose Your Own Adventure" story as we learn about Kansas history and some of the choices people had to make along the way. We will take opportunities to research various people and community groups that are important when learning fourth grade Kansas history and look at the decisions they had to make as well as different decisions that were made by others. Using all of this information, students will be able to put together an adventure story that can change each time you read it because of the choices we have to make. Are they going to play safe or take a risk?

Another idea for an activity would also allow the students to learn about what is going on in the world. We would work on creating a newspaper that would include current events that the students have seen in the news while researching as well as local news for our school. This would give them experience in what it is like to write for a newspaper. They will be responsible for interviewing students and staff, writing their articles, and distributing them throughout the school for everyone to read. It would give them a sense of pride in their work and know that they helped to make something that everyone enjoys.
