"Create experiences for students/learners to engage with technology to enhance and extend their learning."
Artifact Description
Classroom Website
This artifact was created for my fourth grade class to help enhance and engage my students in the learning process. I currently teach two sessions of English Language Arts and have nearly 30 students in each section. It can be difficult to reach all of them with one way of teaching and this was a way that I could easily differentiate for everyone. The students have access to the website on their iPads or with a laptop, depending on what they want to work on at the moment. It includes activities, videos, and resources that they can use each week, depending on what we are working on.

Rationale
This artifact is a website that I created to go along with a current lesson my fourth grade class is working on in language arts. The site features additional practice for the weekly comprehension skills as well as activities that may be completed if they finish their work early. I struggled with making sure that students had enough to keep them engaged in what we were doing as well as giving them additional activities to complete that were more than just worksheets.
The site has four sections and includes helpful links that can be beneficial for all aspects of language arts. They can get to a dictionary, a thesaurus, learning websites, and creating a comic to go along with a skill or vocabulary we are working on for the week. The next tab is full of useful links to extend and enhance the week’s learning. There will be videos and activities that go along with the lesson and give them additional practice. That is also where they can find the week’s vocabulary and spelling words if they need them. The following section is to help them understand their “Language Notebook” that they are creating and where they can check their work to make sure they have completed the task correctly. The final tab is a place where students can go if they have finished their work for the week. Since all of my students have their own iPad, it makes it very convenient for those early finishers to have something to access that is not only for their enjoyment, but to enhance their learning as well.
It was during the time I was working on a website for a class, that I determined a website would be a perfect solution for me to use in my classroom. It took a lot of time and effort because it needed to be something that students would look at and find fun and engaging and would support them in their learning. I include activities and review that can be used for all students.
This site also helped to solve the problem of having early finishers because they could do activities online and do not need to ask what they can do. This also allows for better differentiation, student choice, and enrichment opportunities for those that need it. If it is not listed on the site, then it is not an option for them to do. I have found that many students really enjoy creating the comics online and then getting to print them out and color them, but learn that a story line needs to be present in order for it to make sense.
This artifact aligns with the 1E learning outcome because the website was created for the specific reason of using engaging technology to enhance and extend the learning of each student. Technology has been a major part of each course I have taken and we have learned that we really must be able to use technology to our advantage as students are becoming more and more comfortable using it. Classrooms are becoming 1:1 ratios with technology for their students and it is important that we align ourselves with that change and embrace it instead of running from it.
